  • Te Papa Museum, Wellington – Large historical and geological museum with reference to New Zealand and Maori culture. It was interesting to see, however I feel spoilt by the quality of British Museums, Te Papa is aimed more towards children in my opinion.
  • Franz Josef Glacier, discovered by Julius von Haast in 1865 and named after Franz Josef 1 of Austria. I took a half day glacial walk. Donning large boots and ice spikes we set off navigating a small part of the 12km stretch of ice flow. As the group got further in and the ice became purer, it was quite astonishing. The glacier is in a cyclic state although retreating overall.
  • Milford Sound, A fiord running 15km inland from the Tasman Sea. Created by 20 glaciers which cut into the earth over 6 million years. Falls plunge all around as huge peaks rise from the pool. Navigated in a large ferry boat. The scale is so vast that a simple camera cannot even give an insight into the feelings encountered on the trip.
