Chilean Earthquake

November 16th, 2007

Having been in Peru for only a week after travelling up though Chile from Santiago to Cusco, it felt a little close for comfort to find out that on November 14th there was a quake of 7.7 magnitude which has killed 2 people, wrecked 4000 homes and left 15000 people homeless in northern Chile. Reports say another two large aftershocks were felt yesterday.

Now on the edge of Lago Titicaca, which straddles the Peruvian-Bolivian border and is further away from the fault lines that meet along the west coast of South America, I would hope to be away from any danger. Having just been in that area, it does however make the event more real and I wonder about the severity of the quake in the numerous desert towns I travelled through on the way to Arica, northern Chile.
